Historique :
A l'origine, simple ermitage établi par Armand, chevalier d'origine limousine. La fondation de l'abbaye de chanoines augustins remonte au début du XIIe siècle. L'église et le couvent étaient entourés de remparts. Des saillies dénotent l'existence de tours carrées. Débris d'escaliers étroits grimpant le long des murs, archères, consoles de mâchicoulis accusent une forteresse puissante. L'ensemble était dénommé "fort Saint-Amand". Au XVe siècle, le lieu est restauré après une première destruction, sans doute due aux Anglais. En 1575, les Protestants s'en prennent à Saint-Amand. A la Révolution, le château est acheté par un paysan qui en démolit le corps de logis couronnant les remparts. Au début du XXe siècle, le terrain situé entre l'église et les remparts fut nivelé et une école construite à l'emplacement des bâtiments claustraux.
