Historique :
Notre-Dame-de-Brébières constitue l'un des hauts lieux de pèlerinage marial en Picardie depuis le XIe ou le XIIe siècle. Au XIXe siècle, le pèlerinage connaît un regain de ferveur avec l'ensemble de la dévotion mariale. D'où la reconstruction de l'église d'Albert, érigée en basilique par Léon XIII qui la qualifia de "Lourdes du Nord". Construite sur les plans d'Edmond Duthoit entre 1884 et 1897, elle révèle, aux dires de son architecte, de multiples influences architecturales et stylistiques liées aux nombreux voyages du maître d'oeuvre au Proche et au Moyen Orient (réplique d'un minaret de Tlemcen pour le clocher-porche, corniche de l'abside reproduisant celle de l'église de Monreale en Sicile). L'ensemble, construit en brique, emprunte aussi bien aux modèles des basiliques chrétiennes et byzantines que des églises de pèlerinage romanes. La basilique, ruinée par les bombardements de la Première Guerre mondiale, est reconstruite à l'identique par le fils de l'architecte, Louis Duthoit, entre 1927 et 1931. Le riche décor intérieur n'a été que partiellement restitué à l'identique. L'ensemble de mosaïques est dû à Polart et Le Breton, exécuté par Jean Gaudin ; les peintures murales sont de Bourgeois ; les vitraux figurés de Jacques Gruber

Basilique de Notre-Dame-de-Brébières - English: Ruined interior of Albert Cathedral, 1918. This image illustrates the damage caused by heavy artillery. In April 1918 Albert Cathedral was destroyed by British gunfire, in order to stop the Germans using its tower as an artillery observation post.

Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to reaffirm resolve against the enemy. Some British papers of the time were somewhat economical with the truth, claiming the Germans destroyed the cathedral!

There is something very funereal about the composition of this picture, with the procession of horses in the foreground trooping past the shell of a once-beautiful cathedral. The small town of Albert was badly damaged in fierce fighting during the Allied offensive of August 1918.

Cavalry was considered an important part of all armies at the start of World War I, but the regiments faced terrible difficulties on the Western Front. Differences and advances in military strategy, such as the use of barbed wire and the introduction of machine guns and new artillery, made the horses vulnerable as never before, and many cavalry troops ended up fighting instead as infantry.
