La figure 29, qui reproduit une portion d'habitation de l'abbaye de Saint-Amand, à Rouen, laisse voir au-dessus d'un rez-de-chaussée en maçonnerie deux étages de pans de bois entièrement garnis, à l'extérieur, de panneaux de menuiserie sculptés. Lorsqu'un peu plus tard, avec la Renaissance, on en revint aux constructions de pierre, cette habitude s'était si bien conservée que l'on bâtit encore un grand nombre de maisons de bois, mais dans lesquelles cependant on trouve des formes de pilastres et de bandeaux qui n'appartiennent point au système de construction en charpente ...
