The Cathedral was openbut empty, and the only feature of note wasits hurricane-proof spire made of open ironwork. The market was alive with people,women with huge baskets on their heads,gossiping, and men bartering or seeking theshade. Donkeys laden and children playingin the street completed a picturesque gather-ing which, in the eternal sunshine, appearedtruly Quest Indienne. (60)

Leaving Martinique at nightfallwe took a southeasterly course and at day-break the following morning entered CarlisleBay and dropped anchor less than a milefrom Bridgetown. The island is less moun-tainous than those we had previously seen,having only a very few low mountains, morehills, and for the most part an undulatingsurface. It comprises an area of one hundredand sixty-six miles, most of which is undercultivation, and has a population of 200,000,or about 1,200 to the square mile.
