Text Appearing Before Image: those presentis not known. Eusebius, with irritating and unnec-essary vagueness, says that the bishops exceededtwo hundred and fifty, while the number of the pres-byters and deacons in their train and the crowd ofacolytes and other attendants was altogether beyondcomputation, There are sundry lists of names re-corded by the ecclesiastical historians, but unfortun-ately all are incomplete. However, as a confidentlegend grew up within fifty years of the Council thatthe bishops were 318 in number, and as the Councilitself became known as The Council of the 318,we may accept that figure without much demur.Very few came from the West. Hosius of Cordovaseems to have been the only representative of theSpanish Church, and Nacasius of Divio the only repre-sentative of Gaul. The Bishops of Aries, Autun,Lyons, Treves, Narbonne, Marseilles, Toulouse—allcities of first-class importance—were absent. Eus-torgius came from Milan; Marcus from Calabria;Capito from Sicily. The aged Sylvester of Rome Text Appearing After Image: The Council of Nicaea 213 would have attended, had his physical infirmitiespermitted, but he sent two presbyters to speak forhim, Vito and Vincentius. Bishop Domnus ofStridon represented Pannonia, and Theophilus theGoth came on behalf of the northern barbarians—probably to listen rather than to speak. Evidently, then, the composition of the Council was overwhelm-ingly Eastern. Greek, not Latin, was the languagespoken, and certainly Greek, not Latin, was the heresyunder discussion, for the Arian controversy could nothave arisen in the western half of the Empire. Forall practical purposes the Council of Nicaea was a well-attended synod of the Syrian and Egyptian Churches. The opinions there expounded were the opinions ofthe Christian schools of Antioch and Alexandria. We may take the names of a few of the bishopsas they pass through the gates of Nicsa, each accom-panied by at least two presbyters and three slaves, riding on horseback or in carriages, with a train ofbaggage animals follow Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
