Historique :
Fondée à la fin du Xe siècle, l'abbaye bénédictine de Saint-Sever est située sur l'un des principaux itinéraires de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Elle connaît une grande prospérité jusqu'au XIVe siècle. Après les ravages de la guerre de Cent Ans, les bâtiments conventuels sont reconstruits en 1435, pour être à nouveau ruinés pendant les guerres de religion (incendie en 1572). La reconstruction n'intervient que dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, à l'initiative des bénédictins de Saint-Maur. Restauration achevée en 1703. Couvent loti et démantelé sous la Révolution.

Text Appearing Before Image: wo arches and one smallcolumn, the base of which is of marble, and antique.The corresponding gallery on the south is modern.The nave vault is a round-arched waggon with sup-porting arches. The easternmost pair of arches ofthe arcade are round; they have two orders. The othersare pointed, and the angles of the orders chamferedoff. The windows of the clerestory have been restoredas cusped oculi. The three last piers are cylindrical,with the vaulting ribs starting from Gothic brackets ;the others are Romanesque, square, with engagedcolumns, except towards the nave, where the columnis replaced by a more elaborate arrangement. In theaisles are two Romanesque windows and vaults ofvarious ages, only one bay being Romanesque. Theorgan is supported on a ribbed vault ; it is the workof Dom Bedos, a Benedictine of the eighteenth century,and is classed as an historical monument. The mostcurious detail in the church is the presence of chapelson the triforium level, which are proved to be original. Text Appearing After Image: NAVE OK THE CHURCH, ST. SEVER. To face page 4. THE NAVE 55 on the north side, by the masonry, the presence of thegallery, and the size and position of the windows,some of which belong to the earliest period. Thepassage above the aisles occupies the place of a tri-forium, the engaged columns of which were discoveredin the course of the latest restoration, and the archesand central colonnette replaced in accordance withtheir style. The vault of the nave is of the sameheight as it has always been, but the building has eitherbeen carelessly con-structed or built byinsufficiently trainedmasons, for the differ-ence in the technique ofthe upright wall and thevaulting is extraordinary.It owes its fine effect tothe loftiness of its naveand width of the spans ofthe vaulting, and to itsproportions. The decoration remain-ing consists of sculpture, the collection of capitalsbeing interesting, and reminding one, in the orna-ment, of Moissac and Hagetmau. Unfortunately,a good many have been recut.
