Description :
Le site du cimetière américain et du mémorial dit Aisne-Marne se situe au pied de la colline sur laquelle s'étend le Bois Belleau qui couvre une superficie de 81 ha environ. Le mémorial et le cimetière représentent environ 21 ha et sont établis au lieu même où sont morts les soldats américains qui se sont battus au Bois Belleau en juin 1918. L'ensemble (mémorial, cimetière et bois) sont la propriété de l'Etat français et sont gérés par l'American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC).
Historique :
Créé en 1918, le cimetière temporaire est maintenu à cet emplacement suite à l'autorisation qui en est donnée en 1921 par le congrès américain. Il devient l'un des huit cimetières permanents américains de la Première Guerre mondiale hors sol américain. L'édifice daté de 1930 est dû à l'architecte Ralph Adams Cram (1863-1942) associé au dessinateur Frank Ferguson. Le projet est de style néo-roman. La sculpture a été réalisée par Alfred-Alphonse Bottiau.

The Battle of Belleau Wood marked an important victory for the Americans and remains a prominent part of Marine Corps history.
