Historique :
Le château, initialement construit au XVIe siècle, pour la partie centrale, a été remanié au XVIIIe siècle par le maréchal de Rochambeau, avec l'adjonction de deux gros pavillons carrés et de toitures à la Mansart. Le château appartient depuis le XVIe siècle à la famille Vimeur de Rochambeau. La chambre du maréchal n'a pas changé depuis sa mort, en 1807. A la suite d'un effondrement de la falaise, en face du château, on a construit en 1841 un grand mur de soutènement de tracé concave, dans le goût néoclassique, développé entre deux tours, et comportant une chapelle au centre et de part et d'autre, des communs. Derrière cet édifice, en pénétrant sous la roche, on accède au puisard, sorte de théâtre circulaire ouvert, autrefois planté de vignes sur les hauts. La chapelle a été construite par l'Abbé Brisacier en 1873, curé atypique d'Indre-et-Loire, démissionnaire de ses fonctions pour se consacrer à la sculpture et à l'architecture des églises ! Il a notamment restauré de nombreuses églises tourangelles, réalisé une statue de La Vierge Marie, en marbre blanc, à Lourdes, et proposé les plans de l'actuelle Notre-Dame-de-France, à Jérusalem. L'allée de tilleuls, longue 2 km 8, a été tracée par le maréchal de Rochambeau, à travers l'ancienne garenne. Elle est plantée de deux rangées de tilleuls de Hollande, maintenant bicentenaires, longeant le Loir sur sa rive gauche, bordé du côté opposé par la coupe du coteau. Honoré de Balzac a évoqué cette allée qu'il a empruntée, élève au Collège des Oratoriens de Vendôme, durant les promenades du jeudi. Dans le coteau, sont percées de nombreuses grottes dont quelques unes pourraient bien avoir été habitées aux temps préhistoriques.
