Description :
Il subsiste aujourd'hui de l'ancienne abbaye deux éléments importants datant du XVIIIe siècle : le portail d'entrée et le grand bâtiment situé à l'ouest de l'église, ayant abrité le logis abbatial et devenu hôpital au XIXe siècle. Dans l'enclos s'élèvent deux chapelles du XIXe siècle. Une ferme du début du XXe siècle, à l'emplacement des anciens bâtiments conventuels, a été détruite pour permettre la construction d'une nouvelle aile en 1999. Ces travaux ont été précédés d'une fouille qui a permis de dégager la partie occidentale de l'église abbatiale (J. J. Wolf, Société d'Histoire de Lapoutroie, 1997). Le bâtiment principal du XVIIIe siècle était précédé d'un jardin en terrasse, qui a été profondément remanié au XXe siècle. Une pelouse épousant les irrégularités du terrain, plantée de quelques arbres, est traversée par un ruisseau.

Historique :
L'abbaye de Pairis, fondée en 1138 par les moines de Lucelle, connut une période de prospérité jusqu'au XVe siècle, époque à laquelle elle devint un prieuré, soumis à l'autorité de l'abbaye de Maulbronn en Allemagne. Des moines de Lucelle vinrent s'y installer et un nouveau bâtiment fut élevé au début du XVIIe siècle. Après la guerre de Trente Ans, Pairis eut pour abbé Olivier de Foulongue, nommé par le roi de France. A peine sa reconstruction terminée en 1741, l'église abbatiale fut détruite dans un grave incendie, de même que les bâtiments conventuels, en 1753. Des travaux de reconstruction furent entrepris et en 1765, le mobilier de l'église est en cours d'achèvement. Le maître-autel est commandé au sculpteur Ketterer en 1769 (actuellement conservé dans l'église d'Ungersheim) et six autels sont placés dans la nef. A la Révolution française, l'abbaye est fermée et son mobilier vendu et dispersé en 1791. Achetés par un industriel de Bollwiller, Georges Muller, les bâtiments furent occupés par une usine textile, puis par une faïencerie et en 1804 une ferme ; l'église fut détruite dans la 1ère moitié du XIXe siècle. Sur une lithographie de Rothmuller en 1839, il ne reste de l'église que le clocher en ruines et des pans de mur du cloître. En 1849, les bâtiments furent rachetés par l'hospice d'Orbey et transformés en hôpital rural. A la fin du XIXe siècle, une nouvelle chapelle fut édifiée d'après le projet de Charles Winkler et de nouveaux bâtiments furent élevés au XXe siècle.
