Historique :
La fondation de l'abbaye est due à l'ermite Amantius (né vers 520) qui, à la demande de Saint-Cybard, va s'installer dans la forêt de Boixe. En 988, Arnaud Manze, comte d'Angoulême, restitue l'établissement monastique à l'évêque d'Angoulême et le dote de nombreuses possessions. En 1125, les reliques du saint sont transférées dans la nouvelle église. Au XIIIe siècle, un incendie ravage les bâtiments abbatiaux, le mur sud de la nef, et le chevet. D'importants travaux sont entrepris sur le choeur, la crypte et le voûtement du cloître. Le choeur est achevé au XVe ou XVIe siècle et raccordé au reste de l'église. Au cours des guerres de Cent ans, l'abbaye se fortifie. La couverture de la nef est surélevée et une chambre forte est édifiée au-dessus de la grande absidiole nord. Une tour d'escalier est édifiée hors oeuvre. Après les dégâts causés par les guerres de Religion, des travaux sont entrepris dans le cloître. Au XVIIIe siècle, les ailes Est et sud sont détruites ; l'aile ouest devient maison presbytérale. En 1790, l'aile ouest devient la maison commune et le reste est vendu comme bien national. Des travaux sont entrepris dans les années 1860 : construction de la flèche ; restauration des bras du transept et de la nef ; destruction de la chapelle gothique et des bâtiments abbatiaux jouxtant l'église dans son angle sud-ouest.
