Description :
Porte monumentale, en forme d'arc de triomphe, construite en pierre de taille.
Historique :
La porte Saint-Nicolas a été construite entre 1762 et 1770 à l'emplacement d'une ancienne porte médiévale fortifiée. Le projet d'élever cette nouvelle porte au milieu du XVIIIe siècle est en relation avec le projet du maire Jean-François Maufoux de transformer en promenade la partie des remparts allant de la porte Bretonnière à la porte Saint-Nicolas. L'autorisation royale de détruire l'ancienne porte fut obtenue en 1761. Le projet de reconstruction de la porte, d'un nouveau pont, du logement du portier et d'une glacière fut dressé en 1762 par l'architecte Nicolas Lenoir Le Romain. Le 23 juillet 1762, M. Théodore Chevignard de Chavigny, gouverneur de Beaune, fit don de 4800 livres pour participer à l'édification de la porte. Jacques Lebrun, charpentier et entrepreneur à Beaune obtint l'adjudication des travaux en septembre 1762. Les travaux furent surveillés par Denis Lenoir, frère et représentant de l'architecte. Lors d'une délibération du 14 mai 1764, la rédaction en latin de l'inscription dédiée à Chavigny est confiée au père Chappuis, professeur de rhétorique au collège de l'Oratoire. La porte ne fut achevée que le 10 mai 1770, et en juillet de la même année, Pierre-Joseph Antoine, sous-ingénieur de la Province, fut chargé de la réception des travaux par l'Intendant de Bourgogne. En 1792, les armoiries de Chavigny furent détruites et l'inscription datée 1764, gravée sur marbre, fut enlevée et remplacée par des inscriptions peinte et gravées : " Porte de la Fédération " sur le fronton, " La Nation, La Loi, Le Roi " à droite, " Liberté et Egalité " à gauche. En 1844, la porte en bois étant en complet état de vestuté, le conseil municipal décide de la remplacer par une grille en fer. Le serrurier beaunois Couturier en est chargé, la réception définitive des travaux a lieu en 1847. Les grilles de fer des portes de la ville furent vendues en 1869. En 1866, pour dégager la porte, le rempart fut coupé, le bureau d'octroi et la maison du portier détruits.

But the most pompous entry was that of Louis XIV. And the Queen, on November 10, 1669, when the cannon was fired. Since 1770, the new door designed by Mayor Maufoux to bring the city up to date and designed by the Dijon architect Lenoir Le Romain welcomes visitors from the north. Towards Rue du Faubourg Saint-Nicolas. Boulevard Maréchal Foch is to the left and Boulevard Maréchal Joffre is to the right.

This 13th C Church in the Vignerons district has a Romanesque tower topped with a lovely stone arrow. A 15th C porch with a frame covered in tiles houses a 12th C gate. There is a monolithic tympan representing St Nicholas saving three young girls that their father wanted to sell.
